Why is this Art?

The Merda d'artista, or as it is known in English, The Artist's Shit.  This is the title of the Italian artist Piero Manzoni's work on the left.  In May 1961, while he was living in Milan, Piero Manzoni produced ninety cans of Artist's Shit. Each was numbered on the lid 001 to 090.  He sold many of these as works of art and priced them at the value of gold.  He produced these at a time when his works were focused on the relationship between art production and human production.  It is speculated that the contents of the cans are indeed his very own excrement.

Artist's Breaths (Fiato d'Artista), on the right, is another of Manzoni's works.  In this work he blew his breath into a series of colored balloons and mounted then onto wooden placks.

In your opinion can these truly be called a works of art?  Explain.

Why would someone purchase any of these?  Explain.
Do you think that the artist is more interested in the artwork itself or in the idea or message behind it?

What is the message?  Why is it important?

Take one more look at Manzoni's work, then read the following quote and explain what you think it means.

"Does this mean that anything can be art?  Or does it mean that almost nothing can?"

Explain....

The Artist's Shit Is considered art for all the detail that It has. The Artist's shit may be considered amazing for the texture of the words maybe the fabric and desighns may play a role in why It is valable. The Artist's Shit is for sure a work of art but im not sure If It was fair to price It as the same price as gold. In conclusion The Artist's Shit Is a work of art for the texture and designs It has and Is valued around the value of gold and was mad by a man In Milan overall I agree to call It art but I would question the value as I see gold as more valuable.

    1. I agree that the price of gold isn’t the price of this artwork because it’s easily obtained however it is a work of art because not everyone’s is the same. It’s not the same worth but cow poop is valuable for crop and human poop is Just as vauluable but not much of it is being sold.

Yes, I agree with Merda d'artista being a piece of art as you stated. I really like how you considered the texture, words, fabric and design as to why the piece has value, its something I didn’t consider. I also support the price being expensive for a tin can. Although we may have to consider his legacy. Usually the more famous you are the more value you are worth along with your creations. At the end of the day though it conveys a message n gets people talking for the excrement it may have.

    4. i agree with you because there is so much elements to art that can make you have so much feelings towards it and the price of gold is something i also agree but disagree at the same time because it shouldn't really be that expensive and also because the size of it seems pretty small but if that is how people seen it as valued.

    5. i agree with you because all art have important meaning, detail and value but every art has its price

    6. I disagree with you in that the art has detail, because when I look at the can I just see a dull looking can like any other, and when I look at the balloon it doesn't really stand out from any other balloon I've seen.

In my opinion yes these pieces are works of art because they are a creation from our human body. I believe someone would buy these works of art because they are unique and no one else thought of this, only Manzini. This type of art demonstrates the nature of the human body and how it decomposes the things we eat. The message is art is a creation and must stand out to be considered a masterpiece. This is important because it’s contradicting and makes you think of your own definition of art.

In my opinion, I wouldn’t consider this art, mainly because I don’t fully understand the objective of his work. Maybe they purchased the ‘‘Artist’s Shit’’ because they probably thought deeply about what it could mean other than feces in a can. I don’t know the exact message but my best guess is that it represents how things start to deteriorate do through time. I believe it’s important because it shows how nothing can stay forever. Overall, I don’t consider his work art, because I can’t seem to grasp the message behind it.

Truly, to me this is a joke.
But one that I enjoyed laughing at. Art is everything within and without, making everything art means nothing is art. And popping a squat on a tin can is certainly...
    Something
The 1960s was a time when Art rejected US commercialization. With the rise of pop art, minimalism, and conceptual art. With that being said, conceptual art meaning, art in which the idea presented by the artist is considered more important than the finished product, if there is any. That is were our friend Manzoni falls in. The message he was portraying was that anything is art, meaning nothing can be it too. Poking at the metaphors behind his “art” of pouring it and then sealing it, appeal to the targeted audience of the 1960s. Obviously, the massage behind the art means more than the finished product. And the reason be that, it was just what was popular at the time. Just for another word of thought, in the 1960s Andy Warhol created the piece referred to as 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans. In 1962, year after Manzoni’s Merda d’ Artista. Andy painted 32 varieties of Campbell’s Soup, with them now selling for $11.7 million. Hence, seeing a pattern in the art of meaning and repetition. But in my opinion, I prefer soup in a can than shit.

Foremost credit for taking your time researching the historical context in which the artist had to face. I would have to agree with preferring the soup over the tin can of shit. Although we both prefer the soup the tin filled of shit is still art. As you said it is conceptual art in which the message is far more important than the piece itself. It demonstrates Manzoni to be a man of the 1960s falling trends in the art world. Manzoni was a leader and future inspiration for conceptual artist.

I think people will purchase this because they we're curious about what was inside and so they bought it unless they already knew what was inside and they were just weird. I think he was interested in the three of the them the art, the idea and the message. The message that Manzoni wants people to see is that art cannot just come from our ideas but that we can be the art.

This can truly be art, anything that an artist makes is an art piece. Even if the exterior doesn’t look so appealing, but the message behind it can be something big. Purchasing these items is like buying a painting from the artist, it is still art it came from an artist. I believe the artist is interested on the fact that he was the only one in the world who thought of that idea. I believe that message behind the balloon is that the most gentle things that just wants to go up is hold back by something from the ground. The quote means that anything can become art if it has a purpose and a message behind it.

  9. In my opinion, I believe this can be called a work of art because anything can be made out of art. In other words, art can’t be only a drawing. It also can be made out of many items and different obstacles. For example, Mazoni just demonstrated how art can be made out of anything. I believe someone would purchase “Artist’s Shit” because even though his art is made out of a simple object, it can mean something thoughtful, made to live. The art is more interesting of the idea and the message behind it because Mazoni interpreted that art can be made out of anything and was unique. He thought out of the box. To be honest, I don’t know what the message is actually about, but it’s a clear message for Mazoni for creating something that’s super out of the ordinary. It’s important because the “Artist’s Shit” just demonstrated us that art can be made out of anything and come from our heart. The quote means that anything can become art if it has a purpose and have a message behind it.

The artists don’t always have a meaning behind their art but it’s considered a piece of art because that’s what it is to the artist. A piece is always looked upon differently by people depending on their beliefs, perspectives and etc. and just like you mentioned someone can deem it as unworthy and someone else may see it as a ton of gold. 18. I believe these pieces can not be art. Art to can be anything but a can is not something new. Something eye catching about this piece is the price. The artist must of been really famous or it was one of those cases where rich people want to spent their money on useless things. If I were rich, I would probably spent my money on useless expensive things just to show off. The artist seems more interested in the hidden message because there is a lot of writing on the can. Maybe the message is what made the art piece more valuable. The Merda d’artista may convey the message that many things like a can, can be waste but it can be turned into something useful. It is an important lesson through art that artist leftovers is an art piece used to make an important art piece. The balloon can be a hidden of a combination of human and art production. The human production can be the air and art production can be the wooden piece and the ballon. A combination of the art work he wanted to show. Art can be anything when artist put their mind to the pieces and make the piece stand out because of something. If we said that art can not be certain things then now we would not have a variation of art pieces.

Piero Manzoni pieces of work are to be considered art. Merda d'artista and Fiato d'Artista both works deal with the actual physical body of an artist. As the description said “the relationship between art production and human production”. His art demonstrates how as artist work months to create and demonstrate their masterpieces. In doing so they have to continue being human and create or demonstrate bodily functions. It seems important because it shows how art is everywhere and in inside you, this leads to the spectator to be inspired and comfortable with themselves.
It's also very personal to have put feces and breath inside the objects. This personal aspects show an artist who is passionate, bold and determine, to attract the audience through such a vulgar way some would consider. Usually breath specially hot breath as students say in Animo is mocked, feces is out of the question potent in order and disgusting. Someone might have purchase the artworks to feel connected with the artist since in a way you are purchasing something that once was theirs, it was inside them and part of them. A person might also purchase the items as the artist is famous and there a limited numbers of pieces available which would make the purchase an investment. The artist is more interested with the message since he is going as far as to deficating to put in a can and blow up balloons. He is making his body be part of the art to purposely convey a message.
The quote states,"Does this mean that anything can be art? Or does it mean that almost nothing can?" I believe the first sentence is referring to how there’s art that is very much questioned by many if it is art. That its difficult to classify art when times are changing and new ideas are brought to the light. That if you feel a emotion or message from an object you can say it is art. The second sentence probably refers to minimalist artwork. In minimalist you either work less on the project or put less elements and principles to your creation. For example how people have sold white canvases or all black canvases. As a whole the quote rises the question of what is and isn't art.

I have no idea why somebody would by this but maybe because they want to have a can as a ornamental because they like it. I think the artist is more interested about the work behind it because he did it for a reason with all those elements and principles. He did this piece of art for a reason which means that he did it because he wanted so I’m guessing that he did it because of the artwork itself. In my opinion I do truly believe that these can be called work of art because anything can be considered art if you are creating it. Piero Manzoni the artist took the time to put his breathe and work into his art pieces. If they cost the price of gold then it means that people just like him value his work that much that they are willing to pay the price. Someone would buy these art pieces because they value their masterpiece and believe they should be part of their personal decorations at home or where decide to put them. The artist is interested in art itself but also the message behind it or he would’ve never thought of creating it in the first place. I think the meaning focus on the art production and human production as he said that he focused it on his work. To me anything can be art because you put effort in creating it and at at times it can express what you are feeling without saying any words and or talking about it. I do consider this to be art since art is used to represent emotion and this Merda d'artista is the representation of art but in the sense of a personal work. Piero Manzoni's artwork brings controversy and makes you think of the true meaning behind this artwork which is the whole point of art which is of course to bring out the emotion of a person. The Artist’s Breath would also be considered art since it shows more of a meaning behind it where the artist wanted to convey controversy and also publisidy by bring out something new that he as an artist considers as art. I believe that the reason someone would purchase artwork such as the ones displayed would be just to have something valuable and also unique since these artworks are unique in the sense of how they are rare and only a few in the world. I would consider that the artist is more likely referring to the message of the artwork since art is made to send a message to whoever is admiring it and just the overall passion in which the artist uses objects to project a message through the general public with these artworks. The message that is presented in Piero Manzoni's Merda d'artista would be just be that the artist has many rough times were there paintings do no reach their standards and how overall they keep trying leaving the waste behind and pushing forward to make new artwork. In the Piero Manzoni's Fiato d'Artista, I believe that the meaning of this artwork would be how the essence of a breath is so important since it is taken for granted but is what keeps everyone going and is what allows them to stay alive and to keep on living. I believe that the quote demonstrated how art is seen in different perspective since some people believe that art is just meanly anything while others consider certain things to be art.

In my opinion, I believe that people would purchase these creations because maybe during time they were made people thought that having these creations with them were nice to have around and maybe show off what others can't afford. I believe that the artist was more interested into his or hers creation probably due thinking about how much they would make from one single creation. The message is that whatever you have around you, you should always be resourceful because even the little thing can take you places meaning that you never know what you can make out of it. 1. I agree with you not considering this a piece of art because "they both look simple and non eye catching," and not only that but as well as it is not significant enough to convey any emotions to a human once fully analyzing these pieces. But, I disagree with your comment of "anything can be considered art because it's your ideas put into it" simply because art is not defined by the IDEAS you put into it, but by the emotions and perspective an artist is trying to reveal out of its audience.

  25. I believe that this would be considered art because art is something that you create and expresses your feelings with and maybe that is a way that he was expressing his feelings. Anything that you put your time and energy in is art. And if people like it and buy it is for a reason they are not just wasting money on useless things. It is unique and maybe even meaningful to some people. i think some people are more interested in the meaning behind the art and not really what it looks like. i think the message of this is that the most simple things can be art and can be recognized by anyone. Everything is art there is no question about it .everything was drawn and created to have a meaning in life.

I am not going to lie to you, I was disappointed at the “artworks” I came across. Prior to fully analyzing and reading the descriptions to these pieces, I came with such an open mind to try and take in the art behind this, but I was not able to because I would not consider these pieces “works of art.” I was recently told that the sole purpose of an art piece is to convey emotions in a human mind and being able to connect to the meaning of it emotionally, mentally or spiritually. I was not able to do so in any way, which is why I do not consider these to be works of art. Truthfully, I am not able to understand why anyone would purchase any of these pieces, besides being someone who believes that art is simply art if it is made either by hand or made to look like something that’s never been made before and looks like something “nice” to own. I think Manzoni's purpose was to create something that gives others a piece of himself and that others can use to remember him by because I do not know what kind of message he could’ve been interested to create using pieces like this. I most definitely cannot think of a message this artist could’ve tried to convey throughout these pieces, but I can create my own message for it and it is that any art piece should be considered as such through one’s own perspective and not just by it being a new piece that was created by an artist without any visual significance. This is important to understand because we are surrounded by artworks but it is up to oneself to create our own meanings behind them and being able to understand the significance for them being created. The quote, "Does this mean that anything can be art? Or does it mean that almost nothing can?" means to me that anything can be art if it can convey emotions to a human mind and can have a significance for its creation, not just for the artist but for the audience it is striving to reach.

I believe that these can be called works of art because of the messaging and the emotions it invokes in people. That is the purpose of art after all. With it fulfilling a purpose and having a deeper message, it can be considered a piece of art. Someone would purchase these because in the art realm, it is something unique and unorthodox. They challenge people to think about art untraditionally and question what can and cannot be considered art. Works like these have never been seen before so it sparks interest and curiosity within people. I think the artist is more interested in the idea behind it because it was the message that made it so valuable, not the artwork itself. In my opinion, the message is that even human production can have significance and can be incorporated into works of art. This is important to diversifying art and bringing new elements that have never been considered before. It can inspire someone else to come up with new methods of creating art. I think the quote, “Does this mean that anything can be art? Or does it mean that almost nothing can? ” means that if everything is considered art then nothing can. This is saying that there must be a criteria for art because if not, art will become meaningless.

I agree with your statement that the artist was more interested in the meaning of the art work, not the art work itself. I never thought of the meaning being related to the significance of human production and can totally see where you are coming from. That to me is what's cool about art, there are always different perspectives that not a single individual's going to think of.

  29. In my opinion, these pieces of art can truly be called works of art. A work of art, to me, is something that has a purpose or meaning behind it. A work of art, doesn’t necessarily have to be something that is visually appealing to everyone, it can be literally be anything. Just like mentioned in the worksheet, a real piece of art should cause a controversy, because that means whether it's bad publicity or good publicity, it is still receiving publicity. Someone would purchase any of these, because they can probably see it from the perspective of the author, or they found a different meaning for it. I believe the artist is more interested in the idea or the message behind it, because it probably can be interpreted in a variety of ways and it is probably for the fun of it all, not having a centralized message behind it. I don’t exactly know the veracious, but my interpretation of it is that maybe it is the fact that the author decided to produce it and the people found it interesting and weird but then started finding something to replace it. What I mean by this is that, because the author might not have a message behind it, the people are able to put their own idea or interpretation of it, because there is no exact idea to it. This is important because many artists reflect their ideas into artwork, but this isn’t necessarily exemplified. These pieces of artwork may not seem extraordinary, but that’s the thing, art can be literally whatever, because someone can put an interpretation to it. I think that the quote means that art can be just about anything as long as there is some interpretation of it by someone, because art usually has a meaning to it.

In my opinion these pieces of art can be called "works of art". Although visually they might not look as flattering but they do have a meaning and a purpose behind it.
Because there were only 90 cans of "Artist's Shit" that makes them valuable. Artist's Breathe" were sold which caused controversy. But that is the authors job to spark a flame so everyone can talk about his work. It is meant to cause controversy and make mixed emotions. I believe the artist is more interested in the meaning behind the artwork itself. This concludes my thoughts that I think anything can be art as long as it has a meaning behind it and causes controversy.

Piero Manzoni's art piece is a piece of art that can have many meanings.I believe that these meanings are up to the person who is looking at the drawing. So the meaning is through the one who is looking at it's perspective.Piero Manzoni's makes it only 90 cans to make it valuable/rare.He does this so he can be known and so his art pieces can be known. In conclusion,I believe Piero Manzoni's art is a good piece of art.

I believe Piero Manzoni's Merda d'artista, and Fiato d'Artista are both pieces he created not to invoke emotion but to only justify that he is the creator of these two pieces of “art”. So no Merda d'artista, and Fiato d'Artista both should not be considered art. Someone would purchase these pieces of art just to have believing that it must be something so “magnificent so I must have it”. I believe that the artist is more into the idea of it since it has no real message behind it and seems to be easy itself to make so he should not be so interested. The message this artist is trying to produce is that he wants to be known as an artist so he uses his own defecation and breath to try and put out that these items are so valuable because they com from him. This means anything could be considered art but not truly be worth to be called a piece of true beauty.

The Artist shit and The Artist Breath is considered a work of art. The artwork is telling us that everything will not last in a certain point in life. What the artist is trying to say that no matter what we do and how we do it. It will not last that long. This artwork make me feel like life is short and try to make the best of it. The mood that the artwork express is confusion because why he did it and for what reason. The balloon is the hidden meaning because when you put air in a balloon and you leave it there for a long time. The balloon will start to lose its air and it will start to deflate. An event that I am familiar with is a balloon that my brother kept after his graduation. That didn’t last that long, all the air was gone in a couple of weeks.

I’m not sure if these works could be considered works of art. Personally, I don’t understand the meaning/concept behind them so I don’t think they are works of art. I know art comes from humans expressing themselves creatively in almost any form, but I’m so confused as to why Piero Manzoni’s excrement is art. I believe that the people who purchased these works felt some type of emotion about it, as if they relate to them in some way. Since I don’t understand what the works mean, I can’t seem to understand why someone would purchase that either. I think the artist is more interested in the idea/message behind it because I don’t consider it artwork. Therefore, it should have a meaning that makes it special enough to be created. I’m not sure what the exact message is, but I’m going to assume it has something to do with the human body. The artist used things that come from the human body (excrement and breath) and called it art. I think the message is that anything of human creation is art, this is important because humans basically make everything from technology to farming. Looking at the quote “Does this mean anything can be art? Or does it mean that almost nothing can?” I would say that anything can be art, this man literally used his own excrement and breath and apparently it’s art. So this means anything can be art as long you consider it as such.

I believe that The Merda D'artista art piece can actual be a piece of art because of how much detail he put into those cans and especially that he only made 90 of them. I believe this Italian artist made it so that a person should purchase this item because he portrayed this message of anything is art and so it made it with value. I believe art interest me more when it has a big message behind it. I think someone would purchase the “merda d’artista” to use as decor so that they can fill up the house with random pieces of so called “art”. I know some celebrities buy art pieces so it looks like they know about art, which they don’t. As for the “Fiato d’artista”, I believe someone completely insane would buy this piece. Why would someone want a random balloon attached to a piece of wood for thousands of dollars when you could go to the store, buy a pack of 25 balloons, and get some bark off a tree or something? Why would someone waste all that money when you can make it at home? It still seems pointless. I definitely think that the artist is more interested in the message behind these two pieces. In my opinion the only thing that separates this piece from being a complete waste of time and money is that it has meaning behind it. At least, I'd like to hope so. Because it's true that we don't know for certain, but I'd like to think it has meaning. Someone could have countless reasons to want to buy something like this. For example, what's the difference between something a famous person had and what came out of his or her body. If I could get my hands on Michael Jackson's silver glove then of course I'd buy it. It's basically the same with shit, is it not? Just different things. The same goes for the air in the ballon. Another example is a signature. Those, depending on who it came from could make a person a lot of money, so why can't shit and breath be woth the same? I believe the artist was more into the meaning behind his work than what it actually was, and more interested in wondering what others would think of it as well.I believe that the message goes along the lines of how silly it can be to spend millions of dollars on something that was used or in this case came out of the body of someone just because they are held higher up in society. I believe this is important because there's so many people out there buying cheap, worthless things and reselling them without a care of what it is.I believe the quite " Does this mean anything can be art or doee this mean almost nothing can. " is there to make the reader thing about and question exactly what is art. I believe this quote is trying to show that people should rethink and ponder apon what is and isn't or what should and shouldn't be considered priceless in life.

    1. I would like to agree on your point that people could have bought this because of the "Brand" that it carries. Unfortuantly, in the art industery, most art pieces can be more looked upon because of the artist and their popularity rather than skill and effort. I also like the connection that you made with a more modern view point; that if it was something from your favorite artist, no matter how ridiculos, many people would still buy it because of its label. So yes, i do agree that bias could have a play on who purchased it.

In my opinion I don't think Artist's Shit and Artist's Breaths should be considered works of art. I believe that they wouldn't be works of art because I don't think they evoke emotion. Someone might purchase these two pieces because they might think it's cool to have something that literally came out of the artists body. The artist's message is based on the relationship between art production and human production. This is important because it shows you a little bit on what his thought process was when creating his works of “art”. I think his quote means we all have different ideas on what may or may not be considered art.

  55. In my opinion these two pieces can be defined as art because anything is be art. I think some people would buy this because of the message behind it. When this was created many people were amazed with little things because they knew there perspectives on things would be different from other artwork that has been created. This is important because the form of art can be created in different ways and different forms. This means anything can be art because it is created by mankind and has a symbolic meaning in it.

In my opinion, I do think that these pieces can be considered art. Art by definition can take many forms and it isn't limited.“Artist's Shit” and “Artist's Breath” is no exception to the artistic definition. Art is also made to get a reaction out of the audience like Mr.Martínez has said. The pieces have clearly gotten a reaction from the audience as one of the main arguments are that the piece is easy and effortless to make. But some of the audience has also bought the pieces and at a high price which raises the question; why would someone buy such a effortness thing. I think the simple answer is that no one has done it before, and the audience certainly wouldn't do it either, making the piece unique. Its uniqueness also falls within its meaning and it's price. The concept, as the artist has stated, is the relationship between artistic production and human production. Using your own body to product something that is so private like “Artist Shit” is very artistic since its so unique and creative. The artist feeling of being unlimitedness within these pieces is ,I think, the main purpose of the pieces.

In my opinion these are true works of art maybe to most of us these are just random pictures but maybe to others it can be a work of art. I learned about this last class about the wall senerio that to me it was just a wall but maybe to someone else it can mean much more then just that. When people who see it and don’t consider it art the artist still got the goal which was catch the attention which is what all artist have to it make it catch people’s eye wether it’s negative or positive. Artist also expect a reaction out of people and wether you like the art pieces or not you gave them a reaction which was another goal of an artist. Also maybe for me it might not be much but to someone else it speaks a thousands words. Furthermore, these art pieces make everyone feel a certain way wether it’s confusion or an understanding type of feeling and that maybe taken as consideration of art.

In my opinion both of them can be considered as art because it has a purpose and anything can be art. Not all art piece have to catch the attention of someone to be art. People would purchase this because they could look at the artist perspective and see what is the purpose of this art.I think the message is anything that you create can help anyone any type of way and art can be something simple. This is important because it shows that art doesn’t mean that you have to create something are a board or on a wall it can be something to help you also. Yes this means anything can be art because you are using your mind, you are being creative and most likely gonna have a meaning behind what you create.

  60. I believe these two pieces can be considered works of art when you understand the meaning or reason behind them. To anyone passing by they’d probably be confused and wonder “Why waste this space for that?” I know I wouldn’t understand why someone would put this brown, circular container with feces in it,or the red ballon out for display. Art is anything that evokes expression, a thought, or feeling. I think the artists wanted to create something different that you don’t usually see when you go to admire and discuss art.
Someone might actually like the idea of these two pieces and want to buy them. Art isn’t just beauty at first glance, it’s always been anything and always will be. It’s like for someone to buy a painting that brings out serenity, something they enjoy, except it’s with these two certain art pieces. We are at a time where possibly even a rod can bring out different thoughts. It could be rusty with an odd shape, and give off a old vibe, in a white room. You’d be in a room with something that makes you feel a certain way, whether it be confusion, disgust, or curiosity.

In my opinion this isnt considered art because the artist did not put a lot of thought into this piece of art and to me there is no message, he just did this to see what kind of response he will get if he did this piece of art.But he probabaly got what he wanted because he got people talking about his piece and make people argue if this is art or not and the majority just as myself BELIVE this will not be art because he is trying to make art look so easy like he isn’t putting any thought into his piece and just did something random. These piece of art shouldn’t be bought they isn’t nothing good or specials about them being bought because any person can do this, this art has no meaning into it and it should be seen as a joke and nothing else.

In my opinion, I think these can be considered works of arts because for everyone art is different. Not everyone’s art will be eye catching but for the artist it’ll have a meaning behind it. Behind this art, the meaning is what matters because art isn’t always so appealing. Someone would purchase any of these because of the message behind it or because of the perspective they seen this work in. At the time Manzoni was the one who created this work when no one else did, which made it special and a piece of art. I think the artist is more interested in the message behind it because something soo effortless can mean so much more due to the meaning behind it. The message is anything can be art and anyone can create art whether it’s appealing or not. This is important because not every art work is the same, everyone’s is different. The quote means that everything can be considered art even if the art work seems like nothing.

I believe that these pieces can be considered art because art can really be anything but I don’t think it was valuable enough to be sold as if it was gold. Anyone can blow up a balloon and anyone can put feces in a can so why would I buy something I can do. I think the artist idea was probably that art can be made out of anything even from our own bodies. I think this is important because sometimes we can forget that art does not only have to do with paper, brushes, paint, and etc we can literally make art out of anything. In my opinion these can be called arts of work because they are unique and different to what we now see as to what is called art. Art nowadays can be anything as long as it has a meaning behind it or it is a creative piece that the artist created as he let himself be expressed, both figuratively or literally (as expressed in the Merda d'artista ). In both these pieces I believe that the artist was more interested in the artwork itself due to the name of both works. Usually when artists have a hidden meaning behind artworks they tend to incorporate it into the names so that people can try to decipher the work but here, he puts the names as the actual pieces itself. For example as the “artists shit” is literally his feces in a can, and the “artists breath” is his breath in a balloon. Although I do not think there is a big underlying message as I see it as literal pieces of art, many concealed messages can be found by various supporters and art enthusiasts. One to be the most mentioned and obvious would be that the artist is trying to show how art can literally be claimed to be anything as long as you see it as art. That is why he made his so obvious and practical to make. So overall although these two works can be seen as either imposters for what they call art or master pieces it shows how art can be anything and all you have to do is let your mind express itself along with being able to use anything at hand.

I believe this is actual art because anything that can have you thinking is something that I can call art and when you look at the shit closer you can see that there is a lot of letters. We don’t know what those letters mean they can be symbols, I believe that he does not care about the art but more like the meaning because if he only cared about the art why use his own breath that red ballon that has his breath stuck in it can also mean a lot. What could it mean? Could it possibly mean that we are all stuck in a balloon stuck to the earths crust or what. I think many people would purchase this because everyone loves a piece of art but they would absolutely love a piece of art that you will not understand because of how mysterious it is. I think anything can be art because everything is a mystery to some it’s not but to many it is and that’s how it will always be no matter how you look at it.

The second one is just a balloon blown up & put on wooden placks & to me there's no meaning so it might could me a different type of art. People might purchase one of these because they might want to have it around like for decoration. I think that artist is more interested in the idea & the artwork itself because they both could matter to him & everyone else the looks & the message behind it. These can be called art , not because of the meaning behind it but the time it took to make . Art can be made from anything and not have a meaning behind it but be art because of how long you dedicated your time to it . Some might purhase one of these because it reminded them of something special . In my opinion , I think the artist is more interested in the message behind it because it can be a small situation but a deep point of view . I think the message in the Artists Breath is to let something within you blow into the balloon so if you die , that lives forever until its deflated. I think its important because in some say it connects to the artist at heart , or mind.

I think that the artist are are more interested on the idea of what they are doing to the art.The message is to show what the emotions of the person is having. It important to know how the person is feeling from the balloon to understand what they feeling.

  76. I do think poop in a can is art. To me there's some significance to some poop in a can,as poop in a can could represents a bad relationship or just how terrible life can be or even how sad and crappy a person could feel after being rejected by their crush, hypothetically. Poop in a can could also be considered art because everyone it's getting publicity, people are having debates over it practically every year. Artists have many different interpretations of this piece of art, these interpretations could be the possible drive for artists wanting to purchase poop in a can, as weird as it, it serves a purpose for that artist. The balloon mounted to a wooded plaque could also be considered a piece of art.To whatever artists that evaluates it, even possibly purchase the art, to me and that artist the significance of the inflated balloon is how sometimes the world offers you a promise that looks grounded and secured but is really it's a promise that's filled with air inside, a promise that is just a fluke. To me an artist would buy this art for the meaning of the art to that individual. That's the beauty of art, it isn't always about how colorful, or complex the art is. More than anything its about the meaning of the art to and effect on the viewer. Simply poop in a can and a balloon mounted to a wooden plaque serves that purpose, as my imagination is able to interpret the art in a way that relates to my experiences in life.

    2. Although you do have a good interpretation of Manzoni's work and the multiple meanings behind it, I still wouldn't call it art because it doesn't invoke any feelings for me. Sure it can mean a lot of things with significance, but that's only if you dive deeply enough into it as you did. Sure it has many interpretations but that only makes it more of a symbol than art, a symbol that doesn't make me think any deeper of myself, human production, or art itself. It may cause controversy over what art truly is and can be, but that's due to the idea of considering the piece art, not the work itself. You may still consider this piece art due to your multiple views, but I'm going to have to disagree with you.

The things that matter or the work effort, the details, and the interpretation of the artwork. Why would someone purchase any of these ? Like I’ve explained previously if it catches your attention you will buy it simply because you find yourself lost in the beauty or meaning of it . Even if it’s expensive, sometimes it’s worth it because your communicating with the art . The artist is more interested in the meaning because something so simple and small can have the biggest impact on others . It’s important because you have to see the beauty , to see the meaning and to question the art . Why would someone so this ? Why was is it important to them ? How did they feel or what was going on in their mind when doing this ?. Anything can be art but it can also be nothing .

To be honest, I’d say that both the balloon and the can of shit are not truly pieces of art, because to me art is a piece of work with either aesthetic value or something that provokes me to think or feel some sort of way. When I look at these items I don’t see any aesthetic value and even though they both symbolize the production of art with the production of humans it doesn’t impact my feelings or thoughts at all. It may just be the way I look at it, but this is not what I’d call art. I’d say only somebody who thought about the piece too deeply or just wanted to show off that they appreciate art would buy these pieces, because any normal person would just think it’s not worth it at all, but somebody who put too much thought into it would see past the intended message and believe it symbolizes something like the deterioration of human production and the timelessness of art, which is a great interpretation, but may not be the exact message Piere Manzoni wanted it to have. By looking at the art I can tell that the artist didn’t really care for the artwork itself, but the the message behind it due to its lack of aesthetic value which can be seen by the dull looking can and the balloon that looks like any other balloon. I’d say that the message behind Manzoni’s work is that human production can be considered art, and I believe this because he literally uses his own produce, his feces and breath, and sells it as art. I’d say this message is important because it is showing that anybody and everybody's production should be art. I’d say that this means anything can be art.

The second image should not be considered “a work of art” because it’s just a red balloon on top of a piece of wood which doesn’t impress me at all. I anticipate someone would purchase the first art piece because it’s probably reflecting on their culture or it says something that stands out to them. Someone would purchase the other art piece because they are probably into balloons or the image might be significant to them. I think that the artist is more interested with the meaning behind these both images because they drew it for a reason which everything has a meaning or a cause. I assume that the message for the first art piece is for his people who speak the same language or are from the same culture. The second art piece might mean that as a child, the artist might have had an interest with balloons as child and wants others to relate to him as well.
