Pope Innocent X

The image on the left is called Pope Innocent X by Velasquez, 1650.

The image on the right is called Study after Velasquez Portrait of Pope Innocent X by Francis Bacon, 1953.  

Francis Bacon was an artist that created works of art that depicted images of pain, distortion, and emotionally raw scenes.  


How are these portraits similar?  Explain.   How are they different?  Explain.

Why do you think Francis Bacon would portray the Pope in this manner?  Explain.

What is the overall message in Bacon's work?  Explain.  Remember your answers are opinions.  There is no right or wrong answers.

Calder's Mobiles

 Alexander Calder

Calder's first New York City exhibition was in 1928, and other exhibitions in Paris and Berlin gained him international recognition as a significant artist. A visit to Piet Mondrian's studio proved pivotal. Calder began to work in an abstract style, finishing his first nonobjective construction in 1931.

In early 1932, he exhibited his first moving sculpture in an exhibition organized by Marcel Duchamp, who coined the word "mobile." In May 1932, Calder's fame was consolidated by the first United States show of his mobiles. Some were motor-driven, His later wind-driven mobiles enabled the sculptural parts to move independently, as Calder said, "by nature and chance."  Calder returned to the United States to live and work in Roxbury, Massachusetts in June 1932.

From the 1940s on, Calder's works, many of them large-scale outdoor sculptures, have been placed in virtually every major city of the Western world. In the 1950s, he created two new series of mobiles: "Towers," which included wall-mounted wire constructions, and "Gongs," mobiles with sound.

Calder was prolific and worked throughout his career in many art forms. He produced drawings, oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, gouache and serigraphy. He also designed jewelry, tapestry, theatre settings and architectural interiors.   Calder died in 1976.  (text from http://rogallery.com/Calder_Alexander/calder-biography.htm)

Calder's art today is known as kinetic art.  Art based on movement, time, and space.

Portrait Drawing Time Lapse Video

Hello all,

Since we will be beginning a project that will incorporate both drawing and painting processes, I would like for you to watch the above video and answer the following questions.  

How does the artist begin the portrait?  What is interesting about the beginning process?  Explain.

Would you consider this a realistic drawing?  Why or why not?  

What materials does the artist use and how?

How does the artist manipulate or work with contrast (light vs. dark)?

Where are the highlights on the portrait?  Where are the darkest areas?

Guerilla Girls

While the Guerilla Girls were controversial and highly visible to the Art public' eye their identities remained concealed for a while. They set out to bring to light the long time gender discrimination in the world of art. The felt strongly that there was not enough art created by women in museums and galleries.

So they set out to use the piece above in protest and unfortunately were shot down because it was deemed to provacative. What are your thoughts on this?  Was the piece too provacative?  Why would they allow it on billboards were all could see them in the streets and not in a museum.  Do you think that women have equal opportunities in the art world?  Why or why not?   Explain your answers.

Observe the following painting below and read the information below it:

Explanation:

Van Gogh’s painting conveys both a sense of furious motion and an atmosphere of serenity: stars radiate in a turbulent sky, yet the town below, whose existence Sexton negates in the first line, appears calm and empty. Sexton, who committed suicide in 1974, longs for the oblivion of death, as if death were but to disappear  “into that rushing beast of night / sucked up by that great green dragon”.  The poem is not so much a howl of pain, but rather an urgent expression of an all-consuming desire – the irrepressible desire to be overpowered by a force greater than oneself.

The Poem:

The Starry Night, Anne Sexton (1961)

The town does not exist
except where one black-haired tree slips
up like a drowned woman into the hot sky.
The town is silent. The night boils with eleven stars.
Oh starry starry night! This is how
I want to die. 

It moves. They are all alive.
Even the moon bulges in its orange irons
to push children, like a god, from its eye.
The old unseen serpent swallows up the stars.
Oh starry starry night! This is how
I want to die: 

into that rushing beast of the night,
sucked up by that great dragon, to split

no belly,
no cry.

Your Task: 

Just like the poem about the "Starry Night" above by Van Gogh, you and your partner must read and decipher the following poem.  The purpose of this is for you to find clues and references that associate the poem with a mystery painting.  You must be clever in finding key words and phrases that will help you to identify many clues such as the artist and title of the painting.  Use annotating when deciphering the poem.  You and your partner will be responsible for emailing me a 1-page response explaining using text-based evidence and research why your chosen painting is the one that the poem is referring to.  Include and image and title of the painting.  This is due on Friday May 9th by 12:00am.  This is a formative assessment so please be diligent, and put forth 100% effort into this assignment.

Within your writing, please use sentence starters such as: 

"Within this painting there are several key points that ..."

"According to the poem, it states that ...."

"In line 5 of the poem, it states that ... and this proves that..."

"The painting clearly shows that ... and this is similar to the poem in line..."
